A "Downton Abbey"-Inspired Post

Downton Abbey is back for Season 2 and I am absolutely thrilled. For this history nerd/hopeless romantic/Anglophile living in Alabama, the show is one of my top all-time favorites.

So, here is a little English home and garden eye-candy.... in honor of my favorite fictional hour of the week.

Let's start with the "power houses."

(Literally, that's what they are called).

Their purpose was to be so grandiose that no one would question the wealth and importance of their residents.

1. First up, Hampton Court-- a favorite of Henry VIII.

2. Holkham Hall is called "one of England's finest examples of the Palladian revival style of architecture." Built by the Earl of Leicester in the 18th century.

3. Burghley House- Elizabeth I was quite keen on this one.

Love period movies? You'll recognize these next manor houses....
4. Mr. Darcy lives here! Chatsworth House... or, Pemberley in 2005's Pride and Prejudice.

5. ... my first Darcy was Colin Firth, however, so this is what I see when I read (and read, and re-read) Pride and Prejudice. Lyme Park.

6. The setting of Brideshead Revisited, Castle Howard was started in 1699 ... and took over 100 years to complete.

7. The inspiration for this post! Highclere Castle, also known as Downton Abbey.*

* Little fun trivia I learned while creating this post, Andrew Lloyd Weber wanted to purchase this house from the Carnarvon family-- the owners since the 1600's-- to house his art collection. Lord Carnarvon says it's staying in the family.

Three more, because they're easy on the eyes.

8. The Castle of Mey. More Gothic in style than the above listed (can't you imagine the drawbridge over the moat?) A favorite of the Queen Mother... love her.

9. Longleat (which happens to be the only one on the list I've visited in person.) Home to the "UK's #1 Safari and Adventure Park," too!

10. Last, but certainly not least: Blenheim Palace, home of the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, and birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.

This house in particular has had lots of media exposure including the filming of Harry Potter (see the list here)...

And as a backdrop for the lovely Kate in 2004.

Thanks to Pinterest, I found a way to put up a little tree in my little house.

Two of my favorite ornaments: the Frog Prince and the Slipper...

.. And one of my mom's handpainted ornaments. Every year she chooses a different color scheme. In 2004, it was pink with pearls.

And if I needed any more reminder I am officially an adult? I was giddy as I put up my very own Dickens' Village, sent to me by a dear aunt.

I got a lot of great "advice tags" back as well-- my favorite? "Be careful on the honeymoon. Babies come quick."

*Note: One visitor made a great suggestion of using sticky labels rather than paper + adhesive. The only reason I didn't do that was because I'd already printed the labels... but the stickers are a much better idea!

I'll admit it: I don't have the best track record when it comes to balancing a checkbook. Those who know me best are aware of this and love me anyway, and think it's hilarious (unless I am married to them).

While an admitted shopaholic, I am also an avid bargain-hunter. I get this weird adrenaline rush from "the dig," but c'mon! Two of my favorites have been a Marc Jacobs dress at TJ Maxx for 75% what it went for at Saks; and vintage Chanel earrings at an LA consignment shop... holla! These are the kinds of purchases that makes me feel.... awesome.

What to Do With Old Cards and Letters {A Pinterest Project}

I went on a Pinterest binge this weekend. If you are reading this and are a member of that website, there's no need to explain the addictive, impulsive, and fabulously non-productive-- yet somehow oh so gratifying-- plethora of fun that is Pinterest. I got sucked in big time yesterday, racking up almost 150 pins. (?!?)

I've been feeling a little guilty about spending so much of a beautiful Saturday online, but am not quite ready to ween myself off the virtual pins to actually make something I put on a Board... hence, this post. Yes, I understand it's called Do-it-Yourself for a reason, but let's take baby steps here, people.

I love this idea on what to do with old cards and letters. My closets are full of shoeboxes brimming with greeting cards and old letters I could never bring myself to throw away, even as a little girl. There's just something so innately personal about script, and the older I get the more I appreciate seeing words in longhand written by people I love. Some are even more precious now because the authors are no longer living, making me grateful that I toted around those shoeboxes through several moves.

This idea from Pinterest (originally from simplemom's blog) seems really doable and worthwhile. How lovely would this look on a coffee table? I was thinking of making just one of old Christmas cards, and sitting it out during the holidays. A great conversation piece.

From this post I was lead to the blog owner's store, called Gadanke (an oh-so-cute handcrafted journal shop). I will probably be making my card journal on my own, but am seriously tempted to snag a few of her creations as gifts, like the "You Are Loved" baby book ($18) or the "Seeking Grace" prayer journal ($18.20).

I'll hold myself accountable now that I've blogged about this, and when I am done with my very own card keepsake book, I'll post a picture.

I Did It. I Caved. One Last Wedding Post...About the Photographer

If I could give a bride one piece of advice, it'd be this: hire a great photographer.

You won't remember much of the details (yes, the ones you painstakingly planned with the importance of the apocalypse beforehand), and you'll want a visual time capsule of the day. We were blessed to find our perfect photographers, and I just got back some sneak peeks. Since I am really loving ~~staring at them all day~~ sharing these with family and friends, here we are again-- another wedding post.

The three things that topped my list from the beginning of the wedding planning process:

1. That the day would be a huge celebration with those we love most-- of life, love, God, and family.
2. That there would be meaning behind everything involved-- from the dress I wore, to the cake topper.
3. That photographs had to be perfection because the day goes by so quickly and we want to remember it forever.

What a blessing-- our photographers were extraordinary. Truly. They are MICHELLE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY, a married couple that makes, hands down, the most beautiful creations from photographs.

It doesn't hurt that you'd love to have them over to dinner anytime because they are genuinely great, fun people. Who happen to be fantastically talented. (My precious husband even said the pictures "took his breath away." And he's not even a "breath away" kinda guy.)

I absolutely adore how they "got it"-- that is, the concept of "The Farm," why we wanted the wedding there, and the focus on dear friends and family on that day.

Without further ado, perhaps the best decision I made of the (seemingly gazillion) vendor-related decisons: Michelle Marie Photography album, Christina + Stephen {Farm Wedding}.

So maybe I had a few moments where I felt like this...

But I am pleased to say all the DIY work paid off, and the wedding was just what we'd hoped. I learned a lot in the process and hopefully will be able to share some of that with other people.

The main thing to remember is something I was told a thousand times and was the complete truth: At the end of the day, you're married. Enjoy every moment. All the little stuff doesn't matter. And it really didn't.

It was a whirlwind but a dream.

DIY Wedding: Chapter 3. Etsy Love, Etsy Love.

WeddingChannel.com just informed me that there are 25 days left until the wedding... I would consider myself a mix between Emily Post, Anthony from Sex and the City, and Bridezilla at the moment. (Want to hang out anytime soon? Call me!)

Anyway, I wanted to spotlight the lovely Etsy finds that have come to comprise a LOT of what we're doing for the wedding. I have had such great experiences with every one of these sellers and wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them at any time.

Invitations: TwoCardinalDay

Laura, the owner of this shop, is incredible. She designed my invitations from photographs I emailed her and I was so thrilled with how they turned out. I've gotten more compliments on these invitations than I ever could have imagined, and it's because she's got such talent and style. In fact, I took inspiration from this suite she had already done:

Sent Laura two pictures of the church and farm where we'll have our wedding and reception, and got this:

These depict the buildings SO very perfectly, and she did it in 48 hours for only $30 (on top of the $50 listing fee)! All I had to do was buy the cardstock (she helped me find good sources for that, too) and literally took them to FedEx/Kinko's to print. Viola! And I was so happy with the outcome.

I'm happy to say it even inspired a new invitation suite in her shop!

Vivian at RabbitStop/TieObsessed is incredible. I sent her a picture of my bridesmaid's gowns (exactly like the ones in this picture), and not only did she go to the fabric store that week to find a swatch, she found two and let me choose the one most to my liking. And here you go:

So, groomsmen's gifts? Check. Matching itty-bitty tie for ring bearer? Check. All for $18.95 a piece. My fiance has declared that he's never buying another tie in store again-- the selection here is amazing and the price can't be beat.

Bridal Couture on Etsy

I actually found this shop via StyleMePretty.com which is the site of all things Beautiful Wedding.

And this is no exception. Ce Juane made the fascinator I will wear in my hair and it is exquisite beyond words. They customized it for me, by putting the pearls from the Mina onto the Mia style because I'm wearing pearl earrings.

It's a work of art, for sure, that I hope will be a family heirloom one day. And it was $60.

It's gonna be an Etsy kind of wedding, my friends!

DIY Wedding Chapter 2: Seed Packets as Wedding Favors

I have seeds coming out of my ears.

Let me explain.

I found some great ideas for making party favors for the wedding involving vintage seed labels, coin envelopes, and a bulk purchase of Sweet Peas, my seed of choice. Luckily my friends are willing to glue, stamp, and seal these packets with me, so it's going pretty quickly. But we are a little like a seed packet factory over here right now.

It started when I spied this on Martha's wedding website. Seeds for Save the Dates-- cute!

Since I'm getting married in Georgia, ideally I would have sent out peach seeds but they are about the size of... well, a peach pit.

Instead, I decided that they were going to be guest's wedding favors.

I loved the what I saw here:

And the concept has kind of just grown from there.

There is going to be a sign for guests to "please take one," and in return leave a tag with some words of advice for the future Mr. JoieDeVivre and myself. In my mind, I'm hoping that the seed packet favors that I am hanging up like these below... (just replace the photos with seed packets):

And hopefully by the end of the night, the packets are replaced with little manilla tags (like these)...

... all containing pearls of wisdom handwritten by guests. (Any suggestions on what to do with those cards later? I was thinking frame them?)

500 for $27

So here's what I ended up using:

For the bargain price of $3.00, I bought this listing of vintage seed packet covers off Etsy. Once I had the PDF file,
I could (and always can) print as many as I'd like.

The only thing to do then is put in the sweet pea seeds, ordered in bulk from Eden Brothers online garden shop.

Glue the labels onto the packets with spray mount (my new favorite thing):

For one final fun and personalized touch, I ordered a stamp for the opposite side of the seed packets from this very sweet Etsy seller ForYoo, who I highly recommend for not just reasonable prices on customized wooden stamps, but also for being very fast and friendly!

Do It Yourself Wedding, Chapter 1: "Will You Be My Bridesmaid?" and Save the Dates

I know in the last post announcing my engagement, I said I would try to keep the topics diverse and not go totally bridalicious on this blog. However, I am going to break that promise with the first post to follow. I'm sorry.

Planning a wedding on a budget can prove challenging; but I have also found it to be really fun thus far because so many of the things I'm doing or want to do are going to be created either by me or by people I love. I am officially addicted to the Style Me Pretty wedding blog, because it is a sheer eye candy with a lot of inspiration in between. And wouldn't you know it, they have an entire section devoted to DIY.

D.I.Y.

Those letters are going to be my mantra during the wedding planning process. Here's how I've done thus far.

First project up was asking my bridesmaids to be in the wedding. This was an important decision to me and every girl was chosen for a very specific and special reason. So, I wanted to make them feel special when they opened their envelope, and wanted to have it in keeping with a "formal" invitation to be in the wedding party.

I found this amazing little idea while researching ways to ask a bridesmaid to be a bridesmaid from Once Wed (another fabulous wedding idea website).

Here's my result. The girl who originated the idea did a better job, but I can say firsthand I had a lot of fun doing it myself!

Items used:

-Construction paper (hair color, skin color, dress color... which didn't actually match the real dress color :)

-Glue Stick. A throwback to third grade! You could also use Spray Mount if you're a bit more crafty.

-Cardstock for information card, with a few fun fonts

-Any relevant info the ladies will need to get their bridesmaid process started.

I think one of the most fun parts was creating the hairstyles to "match" the ladies... out of construction paper!

I also decided that my Save the Dates would be handmade. To me, Save the Dates set a certain tone for the wedding, giving those you invite a sneak peek to the event to come. Since my wedding is going to be at a family farm that is very near and dear to my heart, I wanted to incorporate that into the Save the Dates.

I also love when people send magnets that you can put on your fridge and throw away the big card... so I added that element too.

After a lot of formatting via Microsoft Word (mine ended up being an A4 size, so I should have started with that template from the beginning), I made a design with some more fun fonts. (DaFont is my go-to site for free downloadable fonts). Then I bought some Ecru cardstock in bulk and cut it in half to make it go further. Notice there are some hash marks in the middle of the card; that's for the magnets

I then took a picture I had of the farm, and Photoshopped it to look vintage.

Then I used Photoshop once more to put my favorite Bible verse (Joshua 24:15, "As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord") on the magnet, as well as our names and the wedding date-- so the magnet would have all the info guests may need, and they could chunk the card. I also liked that the verse coincided with the picture of the house.

I should mention here that I am by no means a Photoshop pro; I had to Google almost every aspect of "how to" (insert font, blur picture, etc.) but eventually, after a lot of playing, was able to achieve the look I wanted.

I printed this picture in rows in word, formatting a table with the dimensions I wanted for the magnet. I stuck them on blank adhesive business card magnets from an office supply store (only $22 for 100 magnets here), and, my Save the Date magnet was born.

The last step was using an Xacto knife to cut slits on the printed hash marks, and sit the magnet into the card. The final result:

I know I can't spend this much time on every aspect of the wedding, but this was some fun crafting for the not-so-crafty girl!

We are reeling in Alabama.

On April 27, 2011 more than 118 tornadoes ripped through our state and the region, leaving a path of destruction that renders me speechless.

There have been a lot of wonderful things I am looking forward to posting about, but today just doesn't seem the time. These events have turned the premise of my little blog on it's head. Everything I want this blog to be about--the "lovely" and "delightful" seem so.... menial. At the moment.

We will get back to things that are lovely; right now, however, is the time to help.

Present Ideas for Dad--or, the Man Who Has Everything

My dad is wonderful... but extremely difficult to shop for come birthday or holiday time. He's the, "Just give me a picture, I don't need anything" man and honestly... he's right. If he wants something, more than likely he's already purchased it for himself.

But that doesn't stop me from trying to surprise him. I'm getting a little unconventional after 30 years of doing this. Last year I gave him the Who's Your Daddy? Doggie DNA Kit for our family mutt. That was a fun one.

So if you are like me and are endlessly searching for a creative gift for a man in your life, here's one I just completed that was a blast to create.

I stumbled on Giverslog's entry called "Rootbeer Tour for Dad." I thought it was a great concept; unfortunately for me, however, my dad is not a fan of root beer.
But he's a fan of BEER beer!

So I took these blank printable labels and customized them to my Dad's personality:

Then hit a local market that carries specialty beer (and stood in the aisle for about 30 minutes, completely overwhelmed at the selection. I know nothing about beer... so I ended up going for bottles that had labels I thought were "pretty.")

Used some twine, and attached the labels to each bottle and put a little sparkly "grass" in a ice bucket and voila: A little fun for Dad besides the go-to presents of socks and golf tees!

Prettying Up the Standard Envelope

Handwriting things-- anything-- just makes things so much more personal. I'll be the first to admit that I find pounding out words on the keyboard a lot easier than putting pen to paper, but there's just something instantly endearing about seeing words transcribed in script. The writer gives the reader an idea of their unique style in a way that just seems more intimate than Times New Roman.

So, I try to hand-write things as often as possible. The ladies of my life have taught me to always send handwritten thank you notes. And even though it's tedious, I still longhand my journal as well. Because going back and reading my own (albeit very illegible) script a week or a decade later is a little more thrilling that way.

I loved the ideas I found on lettergirl's blog. I mailed three cards this week and took a certain satisfaction knowing that amongst bills and catalogs, my recipients would find happy envelopes like this:

Valentine's Day Goes Digital

Gone are the days when "e-card" meant animated bunny rabbits and midi music files that sounded like a kazoo.

In this digital age, e-cards have gotten very stylish, and can be a great little way to let someone know you're thinking of them. I just ran across this post from Oh Joy! and had to share.

I'm always looking for a thoughtful yet budget-friendly gift for friends who host dinners or maybe just need a little "happy" added to their day.

Stupid Dog Tricks

This may be the most irrelevant post I've ever made, however I'm going to squeeze it into the theme of my blog by pointing out that the Manuel Canovas "Bengal" print mentioned in this post does make an appearance.

I am an avid dog lover, and am the proud owner of rescue shelties. One in particular has the most precious demeanor, and about a year after adopting him he became a certified animal therapy dog. He and I make regular visits to hospitals, nursing homes, and inner city schools where he is unfailingly the most well-behaved there.

But not at home.

I'll let the pictures do the talking. This evening I arrived home from the gym to see this:

Really? My "good" dog, the Canine Good Citizen (truly... he has a patch from the AKC to prove it) has decided that it is great fun to roll the house.

Somehow he manages to never break the roll, never eats or shreds it, and always stops just outside bathroom.

'Tis Better to Give: My Top Gift Ideas for 2010

This Christmas I did a lot of shopping online. I wanted to give truly thoughtful gifts to people so I actually started my shopping early, and am pretty pleased with the results. My goals for holiday shopping this year were:

1. Stay cost-conscious, and;
2. Surprise the person receiving the gift with something they weren't expecting.

Here are my favorites from this year:

This is my 21st century version of putting a great picture in a frame as a gift (and who doesn't love that?). If you're a Mac user, you can do this from your own computer; if not, you can still use great services like Shutterfly to do something very similar.

I did a lot of creating via iPhoto. I am "that girl" with a camera and as a result have over 8,000 photos in my library. I have so many great shots that there's too many to frame, so I decided to do the next best thing. Books can be made hardcover, softcover, or bound. I chose hardcover, with 25 pages, which totaled about $30 with shipping. I create it, then click "buy," and just wait for my new publication in the mail!

I made a book, like this, for my boyfriend. It chronicles our relationship and includes inside jokes at the bottom-- a little high-school yearbook, I know, but the template is so classy it helps out a bit. (And, um, no. He doesn't visit my blog. Ever.)

And a calendar for my Dad. It had a "pets" theme because our elderly corgi passed away this year and I wanted to memorialize him and all our other critters in a way that would make my dad smile. Every month has a quote at the bottom related to dogs. This was about $25 to create and purchase.

Ah, Etsy. How do I love thee? This is where the real shopping occurred. And I have been so happy with what I found. The sellers have all been amazing, everything arrived just days after purchasing and many of the sellers contacted me directly to customize my order to just my specifications.

One good way to start is with the "Pounce" feature:

You can find vintage items-- like these antique cardinal bookends I found from a little store in Oregon for my aunt, for $20. This seller is BDVintage, and their shop had all kinds of great, eclectic finds.

And of course, there's always great handmade jewelry. As featured in my previous post, this talented girl just opened her store and I've ordered from her twice! She even included cute little gift tags for me as a thank you, which I thought was a great touch. Thank you to seller studioro!

Speaking of jewelry, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention my dog's new bling. Yes... dog. Bling.

My friends have gone crazy over his new "Call My People" Pet ID tag (he got to open it before Christmas). How can you not love that?! I just placed another order from this seller for gifts. Customized, beautiful, and under $20! The Happy Chihuahua

There was literally something for everyone at Savor's shop. For $15, I got my mom and aunts some absolutely scrumptious handmade soap gift sets. They came packaged with a handmade soap holder and tied with a chic black bow:

This shop's owner is a total sweetheart who even refunds shipping if you pay more than the actual cost. Besides the great gift sets, Savor also offers whipped soaps (one is called Joie de Vivre!), creme scrubs in scents like Red Velvet Cake and Winter Grapefruit, and even has an unscented line for babies/sensitive skin. The hardest part about ordering here was choosing scents. (I should add here that, as a former Laura Mercier employee who was addicted to Creme Brulee products, these are better... and a fraction of the price.)

At around $5 a bar, it's a great deal-- the soaps are lovely to look at, generous in size, and total indulgences!

The Barefoot Contessa Brings Good Tidings for the Tummy

Ah, the Barefoot Contessa. I have already professed my love for you, stemming from one of my best friend's love for you. Admittedly, my dear N is still much more on the road to becoming the next BC than I am, but that doesn't make my admiration and desire to, well... be you... any less.

Today's episode featured "Festive Fun."

And all that really needs to be said as to why this particular episode grabbed my attention is the menu:

It's festive fun with the Barefoot Contessa who is throwing a dazzling holiday dinner party for friends. A luxurious Seafood Gratin of lobster, halibut and plump pink shrimp in a golden saffron sauce is served. To follow, there's a creamy Pumpkin Mousse then spicy Mulled Wine and festive s'mores stuffed with French Chocolate Bark round a burning brazier in the garden.

I have a particular affinity for mulled wine, as I first tried it on a cold, cozy night in Scotland while living there for a year. The house smelled like cinnamon and the wine was warm and oh so yummy.

As a little (ahem, HUGE) sidenote: When I sent a text to N telling her how fabulous the holiday BC episode was... THIS is what she sent me back.

My tank tops haven't made it to winter storage yet, but even before Halloween, holiday decorations started popping up in retail stores. Depending on the source, the reasons for this are varied-- from a projected upswing in 2010 holiday sales to enticing bargain-savvy consumers with budget-friendly early bird deals. (Christmas in July, anyone?)

The Many Faces of the Chandelier

Looking through design blogs, interior design magazines-- even when deciding on stationary patterns-- I realized recently that the chandelier is a slight obsession of mine. My eye is drawn to them whatever the capacity; in fact, one thing I love about chandeliers is how varied they can be from one to the next. The fact that there are two that "came with" the house I eventually purchased definitely had influence on my final decision, and I'll admit those light fixtures-- not anything practical, like the new HE washer/dryer-- came to mind as I was writing the down payment check. The idea of a little cottage house with two chandeliers was what helped me make my final decision.

As a side note, my house has a 1:2 chandelier ratio now.

Nurseries, kitchens, bathrooms, porches, palaces, earrings, outside, inside...
chandeliers aren't a Marie Antoinette exclusive anymore.

This week I did something really tacky.

The ultimate portrayal of bad manners: the society ladies are forced off the sidewalk as the bawdy (and may I add, pot-bellied) men push them off into the road. For shame!

I have a very sweet friend who is one of the best hostesses I've ever known. She and her husband are always opening up their home to entertain, and every time they do it with grace and style. Regardless of the occasion (and sometimes there needn't be an "occasion"), their parties are fun and memorable. Often they are theme-based, but not in the come-dressed-as-your-favorite-Star Trek character kind of way. When I entertain I always think about great things she's done at her parties for inspiration.

After being a guest at numerous of their memorable parties, I wanted to give them something as token of appreciation. I decided on L.A. interior designer and party planner Richard Nye's book Flair: Exquisite Invitations, Lush Flowers, and Gorgeous Table Settings. It's a smaller sized book and would look great displayed anywhere-- and the ideas in it are innovative and fabulous. To be honest, I have wanted to get my hands on it for awhile for myself. It is total eye-candy.

Below I've listed some of my favorite tips from the book. I can't wait to try them out and would love to hear from you if you decide to use them as well!

"Do it simply, have a good time, and get a recipe or a routine down and keep repeating it. No one is going to remember if you served meatloaf at the last party. And if they do, who cares?" - Joe Nye

Nye's Tips for an Outside Party:

• Place plants like red geraniums into simple terra-cotta pots. Add some moss, so you can’t see the soil, and line them down the center of the table for a colorful centerpiece.

• Offer plenty of comfortable seating. Unless it’s a cocktail party where all your guests are standing, it’s important that everyone can sit in a comfy chair. The fabulous bamboo folding chairs from William-Wayne Co. are stylish and sturdy.

• My favorite type of meal is a buffet, especially for a large group. It’s perfect for an outdoor party, and you don’t have to plate the food inside and carry it out.

• Place plants like red geraniums into simple terra-cotta pots. Add some moss, so you can’t see the soil, and line them down the center of the table for a colorful centerpiece.

• A theme drink like sangria or gin mixed with limeade is fun and helps set the tone. Consider having a fully stocked bar, if you can. Most people drink wine these days, but it’s always nice to offer more.

• Freeze mint leaves, lemon wedges, or strawberries in ice cubes for a refreshing way to chill your cocktails or sparkling water.

• Use cloth napkins, and have plenty on hand for guests. It makes more sense environmentally, and you can buy them inexpensively at Williams-Sonoma. Or opt for high-quality paper napkins. Never buy thin paper or plastic plates.

• Don’t be afraid to mix a $2 goblet with your grandmother’s fancy china if they look right together.

• Great hosts usually blend hands-on work with a few well-chosen shortcuts and quick fixes.

• The most powerful arrangement is often one in which common flowers have been used in an unexpected way. (Nye suggests placing masses of a single flower in unusual containers, such as a soup tureen, mint julep cups, wicker baskets, or an ice bucket.)

• Tray meals—where guests pick up a tray with their place setting on it—are a nice, organized option for when you won’t be seating guests at tables or for outdoor meals.

In case you haven't guessed by now-- the "tacky" thing I did? I bought the book for my friend. I wrapped it. Then I took it out of the wrapping and told myself I just "wanted to look one more time." And I did that again. And again. Finally after three weeks of this, I bought her another one and kept the first book for myself.

I know, I know. Tacky. But as a child I was also "that kid" who brought a happy meal with me into the Chinese place because I wanted chicken mcnuggets, not moo goo gai pan. So I place the blame on my parents. That makes me feel a little better.

Before and After: From Linen to "Blush and Bashful"

I just came across this most recent update from a fabulous interior design blog, Velvet and Linen (by Brooke Giannetti of Giannetti Home). I love before and after pictures, and this one is too good not to share.

Her bathroom was crisp and light before, with varying shades of white; but upon deciding it needed a little hint of sass, the answer was obvious: pink.

For southern ladies such as myself, definitely a signature cul-ah.

I love that the designers didn't do a lot of radical changes; the pretty pedestal sinks remain, as do the lighting fixtures and window trim color. I love the taupe curtains-- although in the brown family, they are a pop of color which really emphasizes the sunlight coming in, as well as providing a good contrast to the white fixtures.

Between the claw-foot tub, pink quilted settee, and crystal chandelier, this is luxury.

Draw up my bath, Jeeves, and please don't forget to the lavender bath salts this time.

I saw this quote recently and it's stayed in my mind ever since. I really want to share it; but I do realize this is my second "heavy" post in a row.
I promise the next one will be lighter.
Topics being considered- favorite beauty products; Fall fashion trends; ~~Jersey Shore;~~ the value of wearing SPF on your face every day... you get the picture.

But back to the topic at hand. So many times the words of others can convey my own feelings more articulately than I ever could. They are succinct, thought-provoking, quick little snap-shots into life and all that entails. Google any topic, and put behind it "quotes" (i.e., "friendship + quotes," or "Mark Twain + quotes"), and you will literally find a garden of wise sayings.

And-- quotes are always applicable. I love that Emily Dickinson, Oskar Schindler, and St. Augustine thought and said things that I, too, have thought... and felt.

The quote above is one that I am ready to put on my wall somewhere. Yes, Word Art. It's one of those lines that initially seems simplistic, but then becomes uncannily relevant. I've literally thought about the statement so much my head aches with that I thought too hard and now my brain is tired feeling I had at the end of ~~all those~~ that one Western Philosophy class in college. And still;

I feel like I should be wearing glasses right now.
I definitely need a leather chair, pipe, and beard in which to run my very wise fingers through as I attempt to pound out this post.

The man who penned this quote was one of great faith, intellect, and influence through "quiet diplomacy." Dag Hammarskjold was a Swedish-born Secretary General of the United Nations from 10 April 1953 until 18 September 1961, when he met an early death in a plane crash while on a peace mission in the Congo. He was posthumously awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

I am fascinated by this subtle figure of history now, because of the one quote that opened this post. After doing a little research, I am ashamed to admit I have a degree in History yet am unfamiliar with a figure so influential in world politics, with a leadership style extraordinarily balanced between pacifism and grand action.

But it is this one statement from Hammarskjold's personal journals, Markings, published after his death, which grabbed my attention more than his very long and accomplished resume:

For all that has been, thanks. For all that will be, yes.

At 30 years old, I realize that life brings moments of utter elation and crippling despair. No more has this been more evident to me than in the last few years, when literally-- in one day-- my life changed forever. Without going into detail, I'll just say that it lead to the eventual breakup of my nuclear family, just substitute dogs for children. *

But for me, the events of February 2008 hit me with a plank that knocked me off the entire life course I had envisioned. I can only recently say with complete sincerity that I'm starting to get back to "normal" again... slowly climbing out of a period deep confusion and sadness.

Sometimes I come across something that triggers the old feelings-- those slippery stones that will always be in the path because, such is Life. It may just be a tiny pebble of deja vu (i.e., the time I burned Rice-a-Roni and subsequently saw a future of endless Lean Cuisines Meals for One, because who would want to be with someone who can't cook?), to boulders of tragedy. Like the death of my aunt this summer. I have thrown more pity parties for myself in the last two years than Chuck E Cheese has hosted in the last 10; I've questioned the good Lord's wisdom more often than any human created in His image ever should.

I had so much faith and confidence in what I thought was going to be my life, that to suddenly fish-tail into the unknown was beyond my comprehension at first. I simply thought I wasn't going to make it. I sank into the kind of consuming, selfish depression that manifests into a stomach-churning, sleep-depriving, "nothing matters" way of life. I asked God Why me? and How could I have prevented this? relentlessly. (My mother used to tell me, "Stop taking everything so personally. It's not always about you." Appears not to have really registered.)

All this to say, I was encased in that awful depression every moment of every day. For months. It was my existence that I allowed. I forgot about my Best Friend and Sustenance.
I forgot about Christ.

But He hadn't forgotten about me. Blind as I was to His presence, so consumed in my own thoughts, He found a way to whisper healing into my life. I remember the first time since everything happened that I realized I was laughing out loud -- not a fake laugh, not a "get me through the day" laugh-- but really laughing. It was at a friend's house watching reruns of Friends. I was taken aback when I caught myself-- it was like having a migraine for months, to have it go away for a few precious seconds.

The pain was amplified through the relief.

Of course the sadness came back, but I craved that relief, I wanted so badly it to come back again. Oh, I ~~begged.... implored.... harassed....~~ asked God for it incessantly. I am ashamed to admit the thought that I didn't deserve this, so You should make it better right now may have crossed my mind a time or twelve.

But, as a Wise Father knows, it's not about my very ignorant and faulty plan. It's about His. And the happiness I was so void of for so long started to return... slowly. In subtle phases I didn't even realize were occurring, I was pulled out of the grip of hopelessness. He did it through the elegance that only He can; through His whispers, through unconditional family support; a job that allowed me space to grieve; through people who came into my life at just the right time-- (including someone that has shown me the kind of love described in 1 Corinthians 13:4); through friends I've had for years; and yes, even through the wagging tails of my silly dogs on even the darkest of days.

I remember being 8 years old, climbing a magnolia tree in my front yard on a whim, and doing it with such vigor that only when I ran out of branches above me and finally looked down did I realize I was way too high-- and had no idea how I was going to get out. Panic. Helplessness. But I got down, and in one piece; because my Dad came out of the house and stood at the bottom of the tree with his arms outstretched, without reproach. He slowly coached me down, branch by branch, all the while assuring me that if I fell, he'd catch me. I remember the utter relief and surprise when my Keds hit the solid ground.

At 28 years old, the Lord coaxed me out of a tree and I didn't even really know it, much less understand it. He did it with such exquisite subtlety that I didn't even know what He was doing. But in retrospect, so much of it makes sense and seems so obvious. Literally, I could list on paper the good that came directly from the difficult situation. All that questioning, the hurt, brought me to a life I am so grateful for today. I am a changed person, I'd like to believe for the better. Why? Because He was with me every moment, whether I chose to see Him or not, knowing the big picture better than I ever could. Knowing He'd get me out of that scary tree.

And I am so grateful.

*I would be remiss if I didn't mention that much worse has happened to people I know and love. As well, I've watched others go through the exact same thing I did, and handle it with much more strength and grace. My "big" bump in the road is nothing compared to things others have experienced.

And, because He proved so good and faithful (as if He needed to prove anything to my very mortal self), I can honestly say that what's to come is fine with me.

It may be unexpected, it may hurt, but one thing is for sure:

He knows what He is doing.
And He'll be my guide.
And it will all turn out okay.

2 : A word that has taken on incredible significance and literally, come alive before my eyes in the last month. The people I've known, loved-- and admittedly, taken for granted-- all my life have humbled me through their strength. Resilience, fortified in Faith and love.

One thing I have noticed on many blogs I follow is that the author will take a break from posting for a little while, then comes back with apologies about not posting. This could be an option for me today; but I will be realistic about this thing and know that, more than likely, not too many hours of sleep have been lost because my little blog hasn't been touched since early July.

For my own peace of mind, though, I will explain the absence.

This last month has been one of tragedy and bittersweet celebration for my family. This world lost one of the most courageous, compassionate members of our family to a very aggressive cancer, and her absence has left a void that supercedes description in words. Our comfort is that she is out of her pain here and now in the walls of a perfect heaven, a reward for a life well-lived while here.

This has has also propelled me into a period of introspection, re-evaluation, and a more clear view of this life and the people who I am so blessed to have in it.

This post has been evolving in my bedside journals, letters that won't be sent, and Post-It notes from my kitchen counter where I scribble down nonsensical thoughts on as I try to process everything.

It is heavy.
It's not about Tuscany, or interior design, or Balenciaga's upcoming runway collection.
It's kept me up at night with how complicated it is; yet, it ends up coming back to the fundamentals. The simple phrases that you see on refrigerator magnets, decorative wall hangings from Stien Mart, or in the guest-room bookshelf classic:
All I Ever Really Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.

Yet, it's a topic that I'm still trying to grasp and still can't quite get words around. I will get there, eventually.
I'm just not quite there yet.

The more I get to know my house, the more I appreciate the former owner and her fabulous taste. I gushed about her in my last post; and I'm back to do it again.

My house has only one bathroom, and it's not a huge one. However, the balloon shade and shower curtain are made from this fabulous fabric:

I love toile, because I like to think that each pattern tells a story. Milkmaid picking flowers. Handsome shepherd man-boy playing flute to an audience of adoring peasant girls. Children on swing with their toes up in the air, watched by their pet baby lamb. (Yes, I have spent far too long gazing at toile in my lifetime.)

But this toile pattern is special-- not only for the luscious color palette, but for the print.

It has elephants.
And tigers.
And zebras...
oh my.

Of course I wanted to know the who and where of this pattern; after a rudimentary Google search of keywords "toile," "pink," "orange," and "fabric," I was almost immediately able to identify not only the designer (Manuel Canovas), but the real name for this print: "Bengal," (and the color is paprika, not orange. Just so we're clear.)

...And I'm sorry, but I must digress just for a moment and say that I want to go to the Manueal Canovas Showroom and just go nuts filling carts full of amazing fabrics. Sort of a Project Runway's "Designers, you have 5 minutes" moment merged with a manic canned-good aisle competition on Supermarket Sweep. Nope, I definitely wouldn't mind being 'that girl' for fabrics like this:

My dogs don't think so.

The main aspect of the room keeping it from having a "wow" factor is the bland, cream-colored solid surface sink and counter top. Thus, I have decided that the teeny tiny bathroom needs black accents to bring some pop and break up the pink/paprkia/off-white color scheme. There is limited wall space, so I'd like use that to my advantage as much as possible.

I have two ideas in mind.

hung by black ribbon.

Like this, but a little less matchy-matchy than in picture 1; and
More mirrors than in picture 2.

I love the concept of this, but the wall these would hang on are reflecting... the door of the bathroom closet. That may be defeating the entire purpose.

*You must go visit this blog. I'm planning a post in the near-future dedicated solely to "...love Maegan" because it's so flipping amazing. The author is an L.A. native with impeccable taste and keen eye for style. She's beautiful, a great writer, and really likable-- get this: she shares her favorite tips and tricks so readers can try it out for themselves. (I owe my latest fun hairstyle, the "messy side bun," all to her.) I know many a Mean Girl who, despite being out of high school since The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill was #1 on the Billboard charts, keep great beauty secrets to themselves. I can assure you Maegen is definitely not that way, because ~~I know her personally~~ I read her blog a lot.

I don't typically gravitate toward trendy or avant-garde, but these Wilhelm Staehle prints are so clever. I love the juxtaposition of 19th century Victorian propriety with Urban Dictionary slang. I'll be the first to admit that the prints are uncouth; isn't that one of the novelties, though?

And yes, some may even push it to the borderline of a vulgar, "Yo Mama" joke (cue the Gibson Girl giggling behind a white-gloved hand). Again, I find the whole concept really funny.

There are a few prints that coordinate with my bathroom AND are suitable for all audiences.
And really, what other room allows for this kind of fun?

These prints in particular are the ones I have my eye on:

My personal favorite, it's got the paprika and black, and I love the lion.

Not quite in my color scheme, but ... an ode to all the Rico Suave-types throughout history.

This one gives me flashbacks to college history courses... countless portraits of British Prime Ministers and 19th century American robber barons. The richest, most powerful men of their time, immortalized in silhouettes just like this one. But the text here changes the entire tone of the rendering. (Maybe it's a little leftover resentment I have left over from having to learn all those historical facts?) This one is also pushing it for color coordination, but makes me giggle.

Ah, an ode to my boyfriend, who uses the Michael Scott "That's What She Said" line at every opportunity. Sometimes, there doesn't need to be an opportunity, he'll just say it anyway.

Again, how incongruous: a dapper fellow, speaking to a leashed rooster (?), who replies a la "The Office." Makes no sense. I love it.

What girl hasn't been here at one point or another? Good thing this little lady has a beautiful rococo-style background in which to wait for Prince Charming.

I used to hate the song "Baby Got Back." I think I could just relate to it a little bit too well.
But I'm a big girl now, and I now embrace the bedonkeydonk the Lord gave me.

This one made me literally laugh out loud.

So that's what I'm considering right now, to spice up my uniquely toile bathroom. I have one other idea too... similar to the Victorian prints concept but more use of black and less use of colors. I won't go there now, as this post as now officially taken me 3 days as is!

I would love any feedback as I try to decide!

Inspiration: A Dream of a Home

I'm totally inspired.

Although I've been in my house for almost a year, there's still a lot I want to do with the interior. It's a small house, so I want every room to be special, useful, and have a unique personality. Admittedly, right now I spend the most time in the main living room (i.e., where the big TV is mounted. How very Homer Simpson of me.) It's summer and I have some spare time. Time to leave the college dorm room look behind and complete this baby.... I want a house like this.

The former owner had amazing style and vision. She took a 1930s house with blue vinyl siding, and transformed it into a gorgeous cedar-shake Cape Cod cottage, complete with a columned back porch and white picket fence. I fell in love at first sight. Unfortunately I never got to see the house furnished in person, but I did get to see pictures. Another huge plus: She left most of the window dressings and light fixtures, and for that I wish I could hug her.

So I moved into this "happy house" (as I dubbed it before it was even mine) as a newly single girl trying to get back on my feet after some major life changes. Luckily for me, it was move-in ready; so that lethargy I felt from Life's slap upside the head didn't keep my house from looking like a home fairly quickly. But it still has a long way to go. I've dragged my heels on really making this little house all mine, to a point I am embarrassed to admit. This is my punishment: publish it on a blog and out myself.

On yes, and one other thing: I have three dogs. THREE. And they are Shetland Sheepdogs. I don't run from the fact that I am, indeed, a Crazy Dog Lady. (I wonder if the neighborhood kids tell spooky stories about me around campfires?)

The Canines of the Household

Front sunroom: It has built-in bookshelves, and a huge window. It's also the first room you see when you walk in. It is the perfect "sitting" room... tranquil, and if it had the right decor, a room that brings the outdoors in.

Middle bedroom/Living Room: Le sigh. This room came to me just waiting to be made into a fabulous guest room-- the lovely former owner even had an amazing geometric shape painted onto the floor in lime, yellow, and taupe hues (I know what your knee-jerk reaction may have been to what you just read; she anticipated that too. So she smartly put up a page from Southern Living with a gorgeous room she'd obviously modeled this one after.) This room needs a guest bed, some major furniture re-arranging, and... oh yeah, those moving boxes really need to go.

Dining Room: Close to being "there." Except for the fact that, the chairs are like sitting on a plank elevated by toothpicks and superglue. I am not exaggerating. They are the most uncomfortable pieces of furniture ever. They are a great dinner conversation topic, however.

Main Living Room: My first real "big kid" purchase was a sofa from ZGallarie that is the center of this room. The color is Pool, it is entirely impractical but I love it more than one should love an inanimate object. (My boyfriend has assured me that it's "actually comfortable," which makes me feel better.) Clean lines, silver nail head accents, dark wood trim... and no animals allowed.

I have silk dupioni window panels my mom graciously handed down to me, in a sage/yellow/red plaid pattern. I never realized aqua and red could coordinate until my mom assured me I should try it. So I did, and it does. This room doesn't need too much more, but it definitely needs a pretty rug to tie in the taupes/aquas. I also have a wall that is very bare.

The Bathroom: Yes, THE. One. Single. Small. Something will have to give if this ever becomes more than just my house, as I am a product junkie (that's a whole different post). Former owner left the shower curtain and balloon shade that is a fabulous pink/orange toile (very Anthropologie). I had a time trying to decide what color to get for towels and floormats (no more orange or pink)... so I went with black. It works, now I just need a few things for the blank wall.

Kitchen: Small but pretty. In keeping with the New England theme, the floors are painted light gray and cabinets are white. The island has a thick light wood/cutting board type top, and a similar light colored wood hides the pantry and washer/dryer. Three french doors make for great lighting and easy view of the backyard. I've brought in some aqua here and there, and for this room really just need some kitchen accessories (NOTE TO SELF: not clutter), and a roman shade for the window over the sink.

I will probably go room by room for my inspiration posts so I can really concentrate on one room and not get sidetracked.

Last week, I turned 30.

I'm not going to lie... I've been dreading this.

Another decade older. In one day.
A new age group in InStyle's "What to Wear at Any Age" feature.
A different box to check on my voter registration card.
I feel the need to start reading The New Yorker
and permanently program my radio to NPR.

Have I been ousted from the world of fedoras, skinny jeans, Chanel's Black Tie nail polish...?
I just can't do Talbot's yet. I can't.
And really, it seems a shame to delete "Party in the USA" from my iPod.

As I tread lightly into the world of the real adult, I am going to take full advantage of the fact that birthdays are the one day of the year you can be totally about yourself.

I am dedicating this post to all things decadent and self-indulgent...
highly influenced by Varuca Salt.

Everything Fabulous

I want a wine cellar.
I want a closet like Carrie Bradshaw.
I want a garden of gardenias, lilacs, hydrangeas, and roses--
and I want them to bloom all year long.
I want to provide educational funding to low income schools.
I want to visit Florence, Italy and the Holy Land.
I want to meet Tim Gunn.
I want to find homes for all the pets without one.
I want to go to Fashion Week in Paris. And London. And NYC. And Milan.
I want someone to discover a cure for cancer.
I still want to be a good cook like the Barefoot Contessa.
I want to publish a children's book.

That was a quick, stream of consciousness list... I am sure I'll be think of more at random times, and will add them as I think of them.

Time to get busy; it seems I have a rather lofty bucket list.

The sweetheart author behind The Swelle Life has impeccable taste, so I knew the boutique would be fabulous and unique.
She has a great eye for all things lovely-- emerging designers, gourmet cupcakes, couture collections, eclectic artwork, new accessories, incredible architecture ... literally, this list could go on for days. She finds beauty everywhere.

And now it's translated into a shop... Helloooo, happiness!

You know a boutique is special when it literally makes you feel giddy just seeing the clothes... imagine the thrill of actually owning them! The pieces are ethereal, feminine, whimsical, yet so very practical. There's a variety of gorgeous hues and textures represented and all pieces are either one of a kind or limited edition. Also of note: the prices are unbelievably reasonable.

I use this blog often as a laundry-list of sorts, a place to compile my favorite websites, people, ideas, etc. I have gotten into a bad habit of writing novella-esque entries... very time consuming and resulting in an average of 1.5 posts a month.

Not today. Today is a To-Do list of books I have seen lately that I "need"... so I don't forget.

First up:

Flair was just featured in the Velvet and Linen blog, and I am in love. All things about how to entertain. Elegant table settings, invitation etiquette, place cards, party favors... fabulous.

Philippa Gregory is to the history nerd what John Grisham is to the law school graduate.
I'm sure some members of academia would dismiss Gregory's books as fluff because they stray here and there from reality...
but really, it takes the charm out of a love story when you know that the dashing prince took a bath maybe once a year.

This one is on Eleanor of Aquataine, an often-overlooked character of Great Britain's 12th century royalty.

The B.C. + Parties = Happiness.

One of my favorite contemporary theologians has a commentary to the Bible. I always love reading the footnotes in Scripture; sometimes they give me a unique perspective on an old story, and always give me a deeper understanding of the Word.

I think the title of this one says it all.

Just found this one, and I think I want it too. Dorothy Draper's decorating style fascinates me.

Last but not least:

One of my best friends has given me a project for the summer, and that is to help her 5 year old boy decide on a "theme" for his room. I have already offered up these two ideas...

And for whatever reason, both have been shot down.

Too juvenile? Maybe.
Impractical? Yes.
But aren't they pretty?

Thus it's back to the drawing board for me and my 5-year-old client.

{ Riches to Rags in Camelot's Backyard }

I'm really excited about this post. It's a topic I wanted to write about before this blog actually existed, because it inherently has all the traits that I wanted my Joie de Vivre posts to contain:
fun, fascinating, lovely, sometimes tragic and always romantic, extraordinary things.

I wish I could tag all relevant words on this topic, but I can't. I want to make tags like these:

Propriety and Rebellion.
Present and Past.
Wealth and Poverty.
Stagnation and Ambition.
Celebrity and Obscurity.
Freedom and Captivity.
Sparkle and Decay.
Fantasy and Reality.

(You get the idea.)

All these are contradictions, but somehow they all fuse together to become the story of
Grey Gardens.

And now is the perfect time to post, since my mom and I recently celebrated Mother's Day by seeing a local (and fabulous) production of Grey Gardens.

Last year, I read an article about an HBO movie starring

Jessica Lange and Drew Barrymore.
I love them both, and I love period dramas based on true stories...
so of course I had to see Grey Gardens.

A side note: I always somehow end up doing WAY too much research after I see a "true story" movie, because I just have to know more about the real people in the stories. Examples:
Miss Potter. Amazing Grace. The Other Boleyn Girl. Capote. Finding Neverland.
(Did you know the real-life inspiration for Peter Pan committed suicide?! That burst my bubble a little.)

But back to the topic at hand.

One thing that makes this story so intriguing to the public is that the two pricipal characters, mother and daughter Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale were aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis.

Edith's husband, New York City lawyer Phelan, purchased the gorgeous East Hampton beach estate as a summer and entertaining home for the family. Big Edie was a beautiful free spirit, who like all wealthy wives kept a house and a busy social calendar, yes; but went against the grain of the cordial entertaining formalities (light gossip and dirty martinis) and gave live performances of her favorite songs with the help of her loyal accompanist, George Gould Strong.

Little Edie was known as "Body Beautiful Beale" and was on track to become a well-married society woman herself. She claimed to have marriage proposals from the ill-fated Joe Kennedy, Jr., and J. Paul Getty, among others. She also had unconventional aspirations like her mother-- a dancer, or perhaps Broadway star.
But while a debutante, Edie mingled with the beautiful and wealthiest of East Coast society.

In 1932, Phelan left his theatrical and at times uncouth wife Edith with a small trust fund and.... Grey Gardens.

I think I see the ghosts of Miss Havisham and Estella peeking around the corner.

After a brief stint in NYC, Little Edie moved back in to take care of her mother. They would live there, alone, for decades; and the once beautiful Hamptons home fell victim to the reckless hands of Neglect, Compulsion, and Squalor. Infested with fleas, overrun by cats and racoons (and thus their carcasses and waste), filled with garbage and decay, without running water... A sparkling palace left to deteriorate quietly to an unrecognizable shell.

Big Edie rarely got out of bed; Little Edie lost her hair from alopecia. They ordered sparse groceries and at times ate "pate" meant as cat food. In the fall of 1971 and throughout 1972, their living conditions were exposed as the result of an article in the National Enquirer and a cover story in New York Magazine after a series of inspections (which the Beales called "raids") by the Suffolk County Health Department.

With the Beale women facing eviction and the razing of their home, in the summer of 1972 Jacqueline Onassis and her sister Lee Radizwill provided the necessary funds to stabilize and repair the dilapidated house so that it would meet Village codes.

Albert and David Maysles became interested in their story and received permission to film a documentary about the women, which was released in 1976 to wide critical acclaim. Using a direct cinema technique, the women were left to tell their own stories. Little Edie fashioned outfits from skirts as scarves, upside down sweaters, and vintage brooches, and reminisced about time with Joe Kennedy, Jr. and the Barbizon Hotel. Big Edie belts out some of her favorite songs and cooks corn on a hot plate next to her bed. They fight, they sing, they love. And they get their long sought-after fame, in a film that has launched a thousand franchises.

Some call it exploitation, some a train wreck you just can't look away from; others call it a celebration of individuality, contentedness, and female independence. Regardless, there's no disputing it's a cult classic and a story that intrigues many (like me) still today--

Just look at the musical, the documentaries, the coffee table books, the bobble head dolls (really-- click the link if you don't believe me), the haute couture fashion shoots and ready-to-wear collections, coloring books, buttons, fan clubs, and abundance of online websites dedicated to Grey Gardens.

I can't cook. I have gotten by for a long time being okay with that fact. I'm the girl who asked her grandmother for a great recipe, because some friends had generously bought me a page in a community cookbook where I was supposed to share "the best recipe in my repertoire." I had no repertoire. I'm the girl who made muffins for a boy in college, only to have her roommates play helicopter with them--while still in the pan--because I'd neglected to spray Pam on the cooking tins prior to baking.

I have even.... this one really hurts to admit... gone to a local market, purchased some gorgeous couscous and caprese salad, and taken it out of the market's packaging and put it in MY Tupperware so it would look like it came straight from my kitchen. So very very sad.

That's not to say people didn't try to teach me. Mothers have given me cookbooks (many with titles including terms like "Simple!" "Basic!" and "A Kid's Guide to...." Friends have literally taken me step by step through making things in their kitchen (one of my favorite memories is of D's basil jelly making day, where she did everything but I proudly poured the sugar in the pot and-- ta da!-- I got to say, "I cooked basil jelly from scratch." Yep.

At the age of almost 30, however, a few facts dawned on me:

1. All my friends do it. I'm a sucker for peer pressure. And eating with friends is fun.
2. You can drink wine when you cook, and no one will judge you.
3. I will mess up. I will burn things. Drop stuff on the floor. Be tempted to throw it back into the mixing bowl. Cut my finger. Have the pizza place on speed dial because dinner is inedible. And that's okay... because I won't learn if I don't try.

3. One day I will have a family. I will have children and will make memories with them. I don't want a eulogy starting with "One night, over a bowl of Beenie Weenie, my mother said something to me I'll never forget..."
4. I don't want to be the designated stir-er anymore.

This is where the lady below comes into the picture.

My friend N is obsessed with the Barefoot Contessa, aka Ina Garten. N has always been a great cook, but now she is a phenomenal cook. Everything she made while I visited her for a week was delicious. Everything. And she says she owes it all to "the B.C."

After the first amazing dinner, we started chatting about the Barefoot Contessa. We watched one of her shows. She's really personable, explains things clearly, and kept saying, "How easy was that?" A welcome phrase in my cooking verbage. And N told me the Barefoot Contessa's story, which was fabulous:
Garten had started out in the corporate world, then decided she wanted to do something more creative with her life. She and her husband saw a little specialty food store in Long Island called "The Barefoot Contessa." Garten wasn't a cook, but wanted this store; she sent in a lowball offer... and the store was hers.

"I had no experience in the food business but knew that it was exactly what I wanted to do," she said.

How awesome to have that sort of blind faith in yourself and your dreams? Love it.

The store evolved into a career, and even though she sold the store she kept up her life as a cook, writer, and "Barefoot Contessa." (You can read more about her here.)

I was inspired and didn't want to talk about learning to cook anymore. I wanted to try it... again.

So I went to the local library and checked out what seemed to be appropriate for a rookie like me.
The Barefoot Contessa: Back to the Basics. I loved the opening pages-- it outlined the "Barefoot Contessa" philosophy:

Food can be simple and fabulous; entertaining should be easy, elegant, and fun.

I found this great interview she did with the Huffington Post -- her words better explain why I think this lady may be the key to bringing me out of the Cooking Darkness.

LM: For the novice who wants to start cooking, what basic utensils would you suggest they start with?

IG: A set of good sharp Wusthof knife. A KitchenAid mixer. A Cuisinart food processor. All-clad and Le Creuset pots. And a whole stack of half sheet pans.

LM: What one cooking tool or appliance do you use most often in your cooking?

IG: My knives.

LM: What are the most versatile ingredients that you keep on hand?

IG: My go-to ingredients to add flavor to things are: salt, pepper, Parmesan cheese, freshly squeezed lemon juice plus good vinegars and a drizzle of olive oil.

LM: What dish would you recommend to a greenhorn cook who is trying to master one dish, would you suggest any one dish to start with?

IG: Roast chicken. It's in my first book, The Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, with carrots, fennel and potatoes cooked in the roasting pan—it's an entire meal and it's absolutely delicious.

For me, it will be all about the baby steps. Yes, I've already gone to YouTube to find a demo on what exactly it means to "julienne" an onion. (It's here, and it's awesome). I have a few battle scars from Taco Salad night where I fought the iceberg lettuce and the lettuce won. But I am going to persevere and would like to thank N and "the B.C." for giving me the jumpstart I needed... it only took 29 and a half years.

I love the coziness of Christmas and guarantee of too much barbeque on the Fourth of July; but Easter tops my list of favorite holidays. The sunshine and flowers wake me up from a long winter's nap, and get me excited about all things new, fresh, and beautiful. I feel like it's God's way of rejuvenating the human spirit, in honor of the miracle of Easter.

This year, Springtime is particularly special because I'm getting to see the yard of my new home bloom for the first time. The previous owner was amazing and innovative in what she planted. Every day there seems to be a new surprise-- fresh mint and basil sprigs, a yellow bud peeking out of a shrub I thought was evergreen, or (my favorite suprise so far) a gorgeous blanket of pink, red, and white flowers on what I thought was a "dead" tree.

Time to celebrate the season! This is my ode to all that is new and gorgeous this time of year.

This gorgeous blog, The Swelle Life, was one of my inspirations to start my own blog. It's joy.

And it meets... nay, exceeds... the highest of expectations for a fantastic site.

The author is a cosmopolitan Canadian-turned-Brit (check!), freelance fashion writer (check!), with amazing photography skills (check!), and an eye for fashion and all things fabulous
(ch-ch-check!).

And she has this thing called "Cupcake Monday."
For REAL.

Every Monday, she features luscious cupcakes in various states of dress. I'm always surprised at what I see. Mondays are definitely more fun for me because there are new cupcakes-in-costumes in it.

ACCESSORIZE THIS: THE LITTLE THINGS

So it's not suprising that this avid reader of The Swelle Life-- who happens to love free stuff-- immediately honed in on a new post that included the word "giveaway." A proud member of the I- never-win-anything-club since 1989, I didn't think I had much of a chance. Truly, I stopped stuffing boxes with strategically-crumpled slips of paper when I was about 9.

But, when I saw what she was giving away, I just had to try.

They're kitschy, cheeky, and delightful. I've wanted one forever. Little notebooks great for list-making or jotting down random thoughts. Tres' cute when pulled out of a tote bag. They have a matte satin cardstock cover and inside are 160 blank pages of Lessebo Linné paper with sewn signatures.

The only thing you had to do for this giveaway was visit the Archie Grand website, which I enjoyed, and become a fan of Swelle Life on Facebook, which I already had. You could also Tweet about the giveaway.

Seeing as the amount of space this entry has taken up, either I'm an extremely good sport and can lose with total grace and dignity...

Since I'm heading to the West Coast to visit a friend this week, I thought I'd put a spotlight on one of my favorite decadent, color-loving, somewhat divisive, California-sunshine designers, Kelly Wearstler. I found out about her through a feature on the always impeccable Habitually Chic blog.

I love her style for being florid and opulent while still embracing the clean lines and luscious yet strict color palette of Modernism. Hip design meets "Hollywood Regency." If you gave up sweets for Lent like I did, the eye candy in her books (Modern Glamour, Domicilium Decoratus, and Hue) are a great substitute.

Bring on the Frappaccinos and Uggs... I already love L.A.

The other day my boyfriend and I were watching Pawn Stars on the History Channel. (Yes, Pawn Stars. That's a whole separate post.) If you're not familiar with the show, essentially people come into this Las Vegas pawn shop trying to hawk their treasures. I've seen everything from a quilt made of over 200 patches of celebrity autographs, to a faux Renaissance jousting lance. The employees then decide if they'll buy, and how much they'll pay. (The guys that work there totally play up to the reality TV of it all... they'll crack a joke and give a sideways glance to the camera, and you just wait for the "Did ya get that?") There's a grumpy grandpa that owns it that never says anything nice. And there's this guy named-- Arthur-- or something? But they call him "Chum Lee." Because he's of Asian descent. Really?)

But I digress.
On one episode, a guy brings in a gorgeous, weathered, and very antique Louis Vuitton traveling trunk. He had apparently bought it for next to nothing at an estate sale, where he said it was in the basement to be thrown away. That trunk encompassed all that I love about antiques-- you can let your imagination run wild with scenarios and stories where your piece is a character. For this particular trunk, I picture its owner as a Gibson Girl-esque shipping merchant's daughter, who wears long gloves, and hats with feathers, and smells like lavender and soap.

The trunk was covered in LV's signature monogram canvas, and the corners and lock were protected by beautifully patina-ed leather. The best thing about it, in my opinion, were the faded stickers from cargo holds around the world. Oh the tales it could tell.

I found this to be a great opportunity to educate my boyfriend on the history of Louis Vuitton. As his eyes started to gloss over, I told him that:

LV was originally a high-end luggage line and began in the mid-19th century.

And, Did you know that the famous monogram canvas design was inspired by Japanese art?

ANDDDD, That it is the most counterfeited brand in fashion history? (He proudly stated that he knew all about Louie-vee-tie-wans. Sigh.)

Then he cut me off. So I will take the rest of this little lesson on Louis Vuitton here, to my happy place. Because to me, Louis Vuitton is the epitome of timeless style and luxury; deserving of so much more than to a sad plastic hook in a van on Canal Street... or worse, this.

The real Mr. Louis Vuitton was born in 1821 in Jura, France. At the age of 14, he literally walked 200 miles-- on foot-- to Paris, where he became an apprentice of a luggage maker. By 1854 he opened his own high-end luggage shop, and gained international recognition after winning at multiple World Fairs. (Fun fact: Vuitton made some of the first flat-topped trunks; prior to this, trunks were rounded and thus could not be stacked on top of one another.)

It was for one such exhibition that Vuitton created a beige and brown stripe design, to hinder counterfeiting... which was already becoming a thorn in the LV brand's side. After the death of Louis, son Georges Vuitton took the company worldwide; by 1896 the monogram canvas as we know it today had evolved, and the Louis Vuitton Company soon saw stores everywhere from Buenos Ares to New York.

By the 1930s Gaston-Louis Vuitton, grandson of Louis, was heading a company that was broadening its product line. In the 1950s the canvas leather was revamped in order to better accommodate production of smaller leather goods such as wallets and handbags. Audrey Hepburn was a fan-- and there's really no more powerful definition of chic than that.

In 1987, the Louis Vuitton of my generation was formed: LVMH. Moet et Chandon (champagne) and Hennessy (cognac) merged with Louis Vuitton to form the luxury goods conglomerate. Purses & cocktails... rhythm & blues... Fred and Ginger.... they just go together.

The Louis Vuitton brand has managed to stay afloat in the ever-changing drifts of fashion trends. It has been translated into the languages of fashion geniuses such as Marc Jacobs and Takashi Murakami, resulting in cherry blossoms patterns and Crayola-splashed graffiti. But underneath the sparkle of Amarante, Pomme de Amour, and Perle Vernis lies the same simplistic brown symbol that covers the trunk owned by my Gibson Girl.

Thank you, Mr. Vuitton, for making that 200-mile hike to Paris. We sure are glad you did.

Anyone in my family will know why green
is a special color.

And it all begins with a little woman we called "Sugarbee."

Sugarbee is my grandmother. She lived from 1919 to 2004 as the true embodiment of femininity, kindness, and grace. She was our Melanie Wilkes; and for me represented the gentle South where the romantic notion of moonlight and magnolias really do exist.

And she loved the color green.

Kelly, lime, harlequin, jade, teal, vert, chartreuse... anything green.

Her eyes were the bright hazel, of course, and her wardrobe consisted of plenty of shades of green. She was the person you would pick up a cute green trinket for, because they reminded you of her. Once, when I was little, I proudly presented her with a stick I'd covered in Crayola "jungle green." In my mind it was art at its finest, and Sugarbee absolutely loved it-- or at least she told me she did. Another example of her uniquely gentle spirit.

She even had a mint green bedroom. It was soft, and soothing, and pretty. Like her.

I have a very dear Aunt who has carried on this love of green. Jewelry, towels, granite countertops... there are tasteful splashes of "Sugarbee green" throughout her home.

So here is my post about lovely things in shades of green, for my sweet grandmother.

{ A Little History Lesson }

Now that's a martial track record to write home about.

Regardless (or maybe because of?) his love life, I am always drawn to anything to do with the Tudors-- today, I'm talking specifically about the wives of Henry VIII. While this topic didn't make the initial "lovely" list to blog about, one of my best friends has encouraged me to post on this topic. And today, I am stuck at home sick so .... blame her and the antibiotics if this one is a snoozer ;)

Can you imagine marrying someone knowing he could wake up one day and decide he doesn't like you... then have your head cut off so he could check his status box as "single"?

Here they are. Mrs. Henry VIII 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

My interest in these queens started in college with dissertation on Elizabeth I's leadership style.* (*Copies of this are available for your summer beach reading list, please let me know if you want one.)

Elizabeth I was an extraordinary monarch; she ruled with an unprecedented style that was somehow innate in her personality. I wanted to know more about her, and how she became the Queen she did-- so I went a generation back, to her parents, Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.

I started with this book, written by Alison Weir about all the wives of Henry VIII (because, after Anne Boleyn was gone, Elizabeth had to call the rest of these ladies "stepmom.") While I admit I'm a history nerd, this one is written to appeal to a wider audience and if you're interested in these stories at all, this would be a great book to pick up. It stays historically accurate while still keeping a narrative tone. And the historiography is fantastic-- I love reading Henry's love letters to his wives. He had game.

I went to see The Other Boleyn Girl with two of my friends, and upon exiting the theater one of them (the one that requested this post, may I add) deemed the movie "the most depressing thing I've ever seen." She then continued with, "That is so unfair, he could just have her killed like that."

While I hate that it was a downer for her, it's proof that the story is timeless.

{ Shopping With a Story to Tell }

One of my favorite things while procrastinating as of late has been to peruse Etsy, an online marketplace full of beautiful antiques, vintage pieces, custom-made clothing, and other hand-made things.

I love the layout of the site (you can shop via "color"-- click fuschia on the color wheel and it will pull up all things hot pink, regardless of item type).

I also find it charming that each and every piece has some element of a human touch. The site is eclectic, whimsical, and lovely.

It's like eBay in the fact that you start looking and realize there are things you need now that you never considered buying before; but without the cluttered garage-sale atmosphere. And a lot of things on Etsy are super-affordable.

Take, for example, this silver double chain necklace I purchased from a precious girl who lives in Singapore and Sidney:

It was called "Believe in the Crown of Glory," and was $28. And if the look and price wasn't enough, I was sold by the item description:

"Crown of glory and a simple reminder to Believe. Double chain necklace, you can adjust the crown to be above the silver "Believe" charm or vice versa!

When the necklace arrived, it was packaged in a charming box, with a hand-written note from the sweet seller. Her creations are beautiful and unique, and I will be back for more from her store, Shupglite

This blog is going to be about all things lovely.

Travel, literature, design, clothes, history, music... I just want to share some of the little frivolous things that make me happy. I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from looking at other blogs and have found that people are incredibly generous in sharing what interest them. This has inspired me to do the same and start my own blog; in turn, I will hopefully pay it forward a little.

And, if nothing else, it's a way for me to put a lot of pretty things in one place. :) Thanks for visiting!
